Speed to Spare : Beyer Speed Figures Uncovered (Elements of Handicapping)

by Joe Cardello, Andrew Beyer

Customer Reviews

Great Handicapping Book, March 21, 2005
Reviewer: Review What I Read (Michigan, USA)

In preparing to bet the Kentucky Derby and other races this year I read Andrew Beyer's fantastic book "Beyer on Speed" and this book. These books go together like ham and eggs. After devouring the information in Speed to Spare I, like any eager handicapper, was looking forward to applying some of the tips in this book. One way this book made me think "different" is how it helps you spot the potential favorite that may be ripe for a fall which can result in a big pay-off. I went to a track in Michigan that was simulcasting races at Santa Anita (in March, 2005) and WHAM! - I hit a trifecta using the information found in this wonderful book; for the first time in my life found myself at the IRS window with a payoff of over $3,000.00! The presentation of information in this book is easy-to-follow and the actual examples really help the "part-time" handicapper that only spends a limited amount of time at a racetrack each year. I salute Joe Cardello's book and urge anyone interested in using Beyer figures to enhance their trip to the track to buy and read this book. You will not be disappointed.

Investing In College Basketball

by Larry R. Seidel

Customer Reviews

Invest, don't gamble!, November 16, 2004
Reviewer: B. Levine

This book is great. I love college basketball and this book describes exactly how to win by spending more time on your passion.

I love the concepts. Imagine a stock market where you know more about the stocks than anyone else. Where most of the other investors are amatuers, not professionals. Where there are few frauds like Enron, Marsh, WorldCom or HealthSouth to tank your portfolio. Where investment gains come immediately, not after years. Where there are dozens of brokers keeping commissions low.

Well, this book describes college basketball betting as just such a market. College basketball "investing" offers all of these, plus none of the disadvantages of large and public betting markets such as stock market, or even the NFL or NBA. The book is a how-to-guide for those who want to gain an advantage and have the discipline to invest the time and effort.

The book is heavy on concrete descriptions on how to gather and use information. It describes strategies for each part of the season, the advantages of specializing in a conference and how to choose one, and the key factors in game analysis. The methods seem to require a lot of work and very disciplined selections, but remember, we're talking about college basketball here. This is fun analysis.

This book is completely unlike "The Odds," which came out about three years ago. The characters in that story were online gambling, something this author would probably never do. He has written a book that teaches, rather than just entertains.

Sharp Sports Betting

by Stanford Wong

Spotlight Reviews

Emphasis on Statistics. Good for Beginner to Intermediate., March 14, 2003
Reviewer: mirasreviews (McLean, VA USA)

Sharp Sports Betting is a complete lesson in betting on the NFL. For the beginner, there is instruction on what kind of bets are available and how to place them. And there is detailed instruction on how to handicap sporting events and determine what bets are worth taking using complex statistical analyses. I say that it is a complete lesson in betting the NFL because most examples that the author gives are from the NFL. Much of the book's content can be applied equally to other sports, and the author frequently tells you exactly how to do that. But I would say that it is not a complete lesson in betting on other sports, due to its emphasis on the NFL. For those unfamiliar with the workings of sports books, Sharp Sports Betting explains how to place bets, money management, calculating what you stand to win on bets, and what types of bets are available, including separate chapters on money lines, over/under bets, props, parlays, and teasers. There is a glossary of sports book terms in the back of the book. And there is a chapter on internet sports books.

Moving beyond the basics, the author lays out his highly mathematical methods of handicapping sporting events and choosing bets. I have to say that I was not at all surprised to find out, on the last pages of this book, that Stanford Wong is also a professional blackjack player. He earned his way through graduate school playing cards. He has written books on blackjack. And he handicaps sports precisely like a blackjack player. I think the cardshark perspective that Wong brings to handicapping sports lends a little extra interest and unique content to Sharp Sports Betting. Not to put too fine a point on it, but the guy is a statistics and probability nut. He doesn't actually make his own lines, so there is no instruction on line-making. He just tells you how to beat the lines that the sports books are offering, using probabilities. At least half of this 384-page book is dedicated to teaching the reader how to calculate probabilities of various things happening in a game -pretty much anything that could happen in a game, actually. I wouldn't know how to begin to explain it, so I won't. In addition to instruction, the author includes a lot of charts which aid you in predicting outcomes, many specifically for the NFL, but some relevant to other sports. There are also 2 appendices with charts of Poisson distribution of events (probabilities), one cumulative and one not. A third appendix contains charts for win-lose-push probabilities.

Sharp Sports Betting is a good introduction to sports betting for the novice. Its very mathematical tone and in-depth instruction on calculating probability make it useful for the intermediate bettor, as well. The author's passion for applying statistics to sports, in the spirit of a card player, may result in some fresh ideas for the experienced handicapper also.

Fantasy Football Dynasty

by Stephen Nover, Brian Saliba (Editor)

With an estimated 20 to 30 million participants, fantasy football has burst into the mainstream of American pastimes. CBS, FOX, ESPN, and ABC devote significant airtime to fantasy predictions and advice, and there are over a dozen magazines devoted solely to the subject. Despite its meteoric rise in popularity, there has never been an authoritative and comprehensive book covering all aspects of the game. Until now. In this invaluable handbook, sports writer, handicapper, and gambling aficionado Stephen Nover presents a first-of-its-kind guide for dominating your league year in and year out. First time players and fantasy gurus alike will benefit-and profit-from the hard-won wisdom, insider tips, and battle-proven strategies found here. From off-season study and draft-day strategies to team maintenance and playoff mentality, this book delves deeper than any magazine to reveal the overall strategies and underlying philosophies that win-every year.
