Betting on Horse Racing For Dummies (For Dummies (Sports & Hobbies))
by Richard Eng
Customer Reviews
A Racing Beginner's Bible, April 1, 2005
Reviewer: Pat Bove "derbytripdotcom" (Baltimore, MD)
If you've recently fallen in love with the "sport of kings" or simply wish to revisit the fundamentals that enthralled you in the first place, this is the book for you.
In Betting on Horse Racing for Dummies, Richard Eng somehow delivers the "rosetta stone" equivalent for horse racing -- breaking down the complex sport and art of handicapping into 26 trim chapters.
I wish this book was on the market when I fell in love with racing nine years ago.
A Sure Bet, March 30, 2005
Reviewer: George Bochanski "mrgbojangles" (Philadelphia)
Congratulations to Richard Eng who has managed to create an all-inclusive primer on enjoying the "Sport of Kings". I liked the book, even though I consider myself a journeyman handicapper and have been following the sport for a few years. In each chapter there is something that I was not aware of (e.g. Acey-deucy Jockeys) -- or not exactly sure about -- and his crisp, clear and sometimes humorous style makes for easy and enjoyable reading.
I think the key to this book is that the author managed to select topics that are meaningful to those wishing to develop their handicapping skill and then he explains them in a way that makes them truly understandable -- even for dummies! No deep math -- no complicated formulas -- just good information and tips that are useful.
I would recommend this book for all novices to the sport(or as a gift for one), for those who want to brush up on their skill set and even for those "professional railbirds" who think they've seen it all.
P.S. I would have included Delaware Park in the list of 10 Best Tracks ;)

Picking Winners : A Horseplayer's Guide
by Andrew Beyer
Spotlight Reviews
The one that started it all, February 1, 2000
Reviewer: Thomas D. Roelofs "rodallison" (Plymouth Twp, MI USA)
I've read many fine books on handicapping and this one is probably the best of them all. A real easy read, its peppered with fascinating and often humerous anecdotes and rules of thumb.
Beyer first introduced his speed handicapping concept in this book, and he shows how to compute the now famous Beyer speed figures. Even though they're available in the Form, its still good to know how they were derived.
At the time Beyer wrote this book, he focused most heavily on speed handicapping, and he would more thoroughly embrace other factors such as pace or trip handicapping later in his career. But he does at least touch on all facets of handicapping in this book, and either a beginner or expert will find it a informative and amusing read.
Enjoy!

I owned this book back when it was first published and the new version is just as good with more updated info such as choosing tack, illness in horses, photos and drawings of what these things look like and detailed info on every aspect of horses and their care. Very good book for a beginner because once read your overall knowledge of horses and their care will be quite good and the type of info you can apply. Also gives you tons of references to organizations, clubs, etc. Great book for horse enthusiasts to own.

Yeah right!, August 28, 2003
Reviewer: "rev_dr_human_cannonball" (Reading, Pennsylvania)
Maybe my horses are just lazy but none of them have been able to hold down a job for more than a week and they can't seem to pick up even the most basic accounting skills. I have had a modicum off success using them to haul people around but that seems to be a bit arrogant and callous.
Anyhoo a got a showbiz gig lined up at some place in Tijuana that sounds promising.

The 10 Best Kentucky Derbies
by The Staff and Correspondents of The Blood-Horse Magazine
Editorial Reviews
From Publishers Weekly
Out of the thrilling victories and agonizing defeats of over 100 Derby races, the editors of the Blood-Horse magazine, the weekly horse-racing publication, have selected what they believe are the 10 best, a loose measure that runs the gamut from Cinderella stories to spectacular, controversial home stretch runs or dazzling feats. For example, they tell how, in 1973, Secretariat, who had been winning easily all year, stumbled in the pre-Derby Wood Memorial. Even though he entered the Derby as the favorite, some doubted he could overcome his previous loss. Yet Secretariat won the Derby easily, posting the fastest time ever in the race with a remarkable 1:59 2/5. Then there's the tale of how, in 1971, a horse with a crooked leg, Canonero II, came from 20 lengths behind to win the roses and make Derby history. Other Derbies, such as the 1978 race between Affirmed and Alydar, featured close contests between two fast rivals. While the prose of some stories shivers with excitement, most of the writing tediously
announces the races. The editors never explicitly indicate why these 10 races should be considered the "best" Kentucky Derbies, making this book more like a random collection of popular favorites. (Apr.)
